The aromatic singularity of the Right Bank - Cabernet Franc in its most refined expression

Saint-Émilion | Premier Grand Cru Classé A (until 2021)

Château Cheval Blanc occupies a unique position in Bordeaux. At the frontier between Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, it escapes the conventions of both. While Merlot dominates the Right Bank, Cheval Blanc has always placed Cabernet Franc at the center of its identity, shaping wines defined not by volume, but by line, texture, and aromatic clarity. Across its 39 hectares, the estate articulates a vision of balance that is both precise and unmistakable. In 2021, it chose to step away from the classification system, reaffirming a form of creative independence rooted in terroir rather than designation.

Terroirs
The vineyard is composed of a rare mosaic of quaternary gravel soils at the edge of Pomerol. Around 40 percent consists of gravel over varied clay subsoils, 40 percent of deep gravels, and 20 percent of sandy clays. This diversity creates a wide range of expressions, while the excellent drainage and heat retention of the gravels provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Franc to ripen slowly and evenly.

Viticulture
The vineyard is planted predominantly with Cabernet Franc (52 percent), complemented by Merlot (43 percent) and a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (5 percent). Vines average between forty and forty-five years of age, planted at a density of approximately 6,500 vines per hectare. Harvests are deliberately late, with rigorous sorting both in the vineyard and in the cellar to ensure only perfectly balanced fruit is retained.

Vinification
Fermentations take place in temperature-controlled vats, with macerations lasting between twenty and twenty-five days. Extraction is handled with restraint, favouring aromatic precision over structural excess. Each parcel is vinified separately, and the final blend is assembled after malolactic fermentation, allowing for a clear reading of each component.

Élevage
The wines are aged for eighteen to twenty months in French oak barrels, with around 50 to 60 percent new oak. The élevage remains measured, designed to support the wine’s architecture without obscuring its aromatic definition.

Style and ageing potential
100% new, 16-18 months. Cheval Blanc is defined by its aromatic brilliance. Notes of redcurrant, raspberry, violet, fine spices, cedar and liquorice unfold with remarkable clarity. The texture is silky, the tannins refined, and the structure linear rather than expansive. The wine evolves gradually, reaching its full expression between twenty and fifty years, while the greatest vintages can continue developing well beyond sixty years.

FAQ
Why Cabernet Franc over Merlot?
Gravelly, well-drained terroir suits Cabernet Franc better. Creates fine, linear aromatics rather than Merlot's ample richness.

Why withdraw from classification?
2021 decision to privilege artistic autonomy over external certifications. Only a great château can afford such audacity.

Ideal flavor profile?
Redcurrant, raspberry, violet, then with age tobacco, leather, tea leaf. Aromatic linearity rather than density; never heavy.

How does terroir explain its unique style?
Quaternary gravels and optimal drainage create conditions where Cabernet Franc ripens slowly, concentrating aromatics without excessive alcohol. Finesse over power.
