A historic reading of Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

Domaine des Lambrays holds a central position in the viticultural history of the Côte de Nuits. Located in Morey-Saint-Denis, between Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, the estate is inseparable from its monopole: Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru. The origins of the Clos date back to the 14th century. Defined as early as the Middle Ages, it is one of the rare historic Burgundian clos whose parcel integrity has been preserved over time. After being fragmented during the French Revolution, it was gradually reassembled throughout the 20th century, eventually regaining its current unity. Today, Clos des Lambrays covers approximately 8.7 hectares in a single block, making it one of the largest grand cru monopoles in the Côte de Nuits.

Terroir

The vineyard rests on a mosaic of marl-limestone soils, with significant variation depending on altitude. The lower section features deeper, more clay-rich soils, bringing density and structure. The mid-slope lies on a more limestone-dominant substrate, favoring tension and finesse. The upper section, rockier and more free-draining, contributes freshness and verticality. This internal diversity explains the wine’s natural complexity. Winemaking takes these differences into account, with certain parcels harvested and sometimes vinified separately before blending. The average vine age is high, with a significant proportion of old vines exceeding 40 years.

Viticulture

Domaine des Lambrays has progressively strengthened its commitment to more sustainable viticulture. Soils are worked mechanically, and yield management is handled with precision. Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand, with sorting both in the vineyard and upon reception. The search for ripeness is guided by balance: controlled concentration, preserved acidity, and full phenolic maturity without excess. Yields vary depending on the vintage but remain moderate for a grand cru of this scale.

Vinification

The proportion of whole cluster varies depending on the vintage, typically ranging between 30% and 50%. This choice aims to preserve aromatic finesse and structure without overpowering the fruit.Fermentations are carried out using indigenous yeasts. Maceration lasts around three weeks, with a gradual extraction process. The objective is to produce a structured wine without rigidity.

Aging takes place in French oak barrels for approximately 18 to 20 months. The proportion of new oak is generally around 40% to 50% for Clos des Lambrays. The wood is integrated progressively to support the structure without masking the terroir. No systematic filtration is applied.

Ageing and style

Clos des Lambrays is defined by its balance between power and finesse. Less massive than some grands crus from Gevrey-Chambertin, yet more structured than those of Chambolle-Musigny, it occupies an intermediate position, combining density, precision, and tension. Its aging potential frequently exceeds twenty years in structured vintages.
