Burgundy

Historic Volnay estate now led by Thibaud Clerget, producing refined, small-production Pinot Noirs that combine aromatic delicacy and modern precision.
Domaine Y. Clerget carries one of the long-standing signatures of Volnay, now reinterpreted by Thibaud Clerget. Since taking over the estate, he has introduced a quieter, more deliberate precision, refining the domaine’s identity without altering its foundations. The vineyard, spanning around five hectares, is focused on some of Volnay’s most articulate premier crus, complemented by holdings in Pommard. What emerges is a reading of Pinot Noir that privileges line, texture, and clarity over weight.
Terroirs
Volnay is defined by its fine limestone soils, which naturally lend themselves to wines of finesse and aromatic lift. Within this framework, each premier cru brings its own nuance. Caillerets is often the most linear and mineral, with a finely etched structure. Champans offers more amplitude while retaining elegance, and Santenots introduces a slightly broader, more structured profile. The Pommard parcels provide a counterpoint, adding depth and a firmer backbone to the range.
Viticulture
The domaine follows sustainable practices, with a clear trajectory toward organic farming. Vineyard work is precise and attentive, with careful soil management and controlled yields to preserve balance and purity. Harvest is carried out entirely by hand, ensuring rigorous selection of the fruit.
Vinification
Destemming is adapted to each vintage, ranging from partial to full. Fermentations rely on indigenous yeasts, with macerations lasting between two and three weeks. Extraction is handled with restraint, aiming to preserve the natural finesse of the tannins and the integrity of the fruit.
Élevage
Ageing takes place over approximately sixteen to eighteen months in French oak barrels, with 20 to 30 percent new oak. The élevage is designed to support the wine’s structure while allowing the terroir to remain fully legible.
Style and ageing potential
These are wines built on precision and aromatic clarity. The tannins are fine, almost powdery, supporting a profile that is both delicate and persistent. With time, the wines gain in complexity while maintaining their defining elegance. The premier crus typically evolve over ten to twenty years, depending on the vintage.
